The Odisha government has started a ₹141.50 crore drought mitigation initiative that focuses on long-term resilience rather than short-term alleviation in an effort to protect agriculture against recurrent droughts and climatic stress.
A memorandum of agreement signed during Krushi Odisha 2026’s opening session formalized the program, which is called the Odisha Agriculture Drought Mitigation Programme. The program aims to address structural vulnerabilities in rain-dependent farming systems and is in line with the national framework for drought mitigation.
The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority, national disaster management organizations, and prestigious agricultural research organizations are among the organizations that the project brings together, according to officials. In order to minimize crop losses during extended dry spells, the partnership attempts to combine scientific planning with regional agricultural methods.
Three drought-prone blocks—Komna in Nuapada district, Kosagumuda in Nabarangpur district, and Raruan in Mayurbhanj district—will get the program’s initial implementation. The first phase is anticipated to directly help about 24,000 farming households.
Improved water conservation structures, the promotion of drought-tolerant crop varieties, soil moisture management, and climate-adaptive farming practices are important interventions. The program also places a strong focus on community involvement, with Farmer Producer Organizations and Self-Help Groups contributing to the implementation and collection of farm products.
A computerized monitoring system would watch indications including crop status, soil moisture levels, and rainfall patterns to guarantee efficient execution. This will allow for prompt course correction and data-driven decision-making.
According to state officials, the program represents a change in agriculture toward preventive and adaptable methods, especially for areas that frequently experience unpredictable rains. The government hopes to increase food security in vulnerable districts, stabilize agricultural output, and safeguard rural livelihoods by bolstering farm resilience at the local level.
