In an important move toward making the state capital totally slum-free, the Odisha government has declared that eligible slum dwellers will henceforth be provided with actual homes rather than simply land.
The initiative intends to provide secure, dignified homes for thousands of families living in Bhubaneswar’s informal settlements.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra stated that the government has created a comprehensive strategy to improve the capital’s urban landscape. The program would provide individuals with inexpensive housing options ranging from ₹14 lakh to ₹50 lakh.
Mahapatra revealed that as a pilot project, the government has already built 90 two-bedroom (2BHK) dwellings, paving the way for mass-scale delivery of low-cost housing units. These houses will be allotted in the first phase to slum dwellers, he added.
“We are making arrangements to provide homes to as many common people as possible,” the minister said. “Designs for additional housing units have been finalized, and the project will be expanded further based on its success.”
The government intends to immediately construct and deliver cheap dwellings rather than awarding land parcels, resulting in speedier and more planned urban growth.
