Naba Kishore Das, Odisha’s Health and Family Welfare Minister, was shot at by an assistant sub-inspector of police in Jharsuguda district on Sunday, according to an officer.
The incident occurred in the district’s Brajrajnagar town while the minister was on his way to a meeting.
The condition of Health Minister Naba Kisore Das remains critical, a statement issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department noted. “The Health Minister’s condition remains critical. He was airlifted to Bhubaneswar from Jharsuguda with an accompanying medical team of specialists and life support equipment,” it added.
From the Bhubaneswar airport, Das was shifted immediately to Apollo Hospital, Bhubaneswar. The Health Minister is presently at the operation theatre of Apollo Hospitals. “A team of the best specialists in the State, drawn from Apollo Hospital, SCB MCH and Capital Hospital are attending to him,” the Department’s statement noted.
Odisha Police’s Crime Branch has taken over the investigation into the gun attack on Health Minister Naba Das in Brajarajnagar today.
According to sources, a seven-member special investigating team comprised of cyber experts, ballistic experts, and Crime Branch officers has been formed.
The team is led by DSP Ramesh Chandra Dora. Dora and a ballistic expert arrived in Jharsuguda by special helicopter to begin the investigation. ADG CID-CB Arun Bothara accompanied them as well to personally supervise and monitor the investigation.
According to an official, the Crime Branch team will question the accused ASI in order to determine the reason for his attack on the minister.
Earlier, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed that the incident be investigated by the Crime Branch.
Notably, Das was shot earlier in the day when police ASI Gopal Das opened fire on him in Brajarajnagar.
