The Odisha State Bar Council has strongly condemned the brutal murder of senior advocate Pitabash Panda and has declared a statewide lockdown strike for Wednesday in protest.
Panda, an Odisha State Bar Council member elected with the most votes, was assassinated by two unidentified assailants in front of his home, according to Council President Sitanshu Mohan Dwivedi.
In a statement, Dwivedi said the legal fraternity is deeply shocked by the incident and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits, a judicial inquiry, and ₹1 crore compensation for the bereaved families.
“Lawyers across the state will abstain from work on Wednesday as a mark of respect and protest. This will be the highest tribute we can pay to our departed colleague,” Dwivedi stated.
After visiting Berhampur, where the tragedy occurred, representatives from the State Bar Council emphasized that the government must move quickly to ensure justice and provide financial assistance to the victim’s family.
The murder of the senior advocate has prompted indignation among Odisha’s legal experts, who have demanded for increased security measures for bar members and harsh punishment for those responsible.
