The famous ‘Rukuna Rath Yatra’ of Lord Lingaraj began today, Wednesday, in the capital city of Bhubaneswar. At 3:30 p.m., the chariot pulling will begin. The Mangala Aalati of Lord Lingaraj began at 5 a.m., followed by the Lord’s Public Darshan.

The Surya puja will begin at 10.45 a.m., followed by the Lord’s Pahandi ritual from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Lord’s other rituals will take place on top of the Chariot between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. On Saptami, water for the ritual was collected from the Marichi Kunda near the Mukteswar temple for the Rukuna Rath Yatra.

The Rukuna Rath Yatra has gathered thousands of devotees in the Rath ground.

All preparations have been made to ensure that the rath yatra runs smoothly. A total of 12 police platoons have been deployed for the drawing of the Rukuna rath. According to reports, the police have also made other related arrangements such as distributing water and providing fans to devotees.

It has also been requested that obscene songs be prohibited from being played atop the rath. The commissioner of police has also made elaborate traffic control arrangements. Vehicles will be diverted along specific routes to avoid overcrowding and road congestion.

In addition, two more DCPs, six ACPs, 12 inspectors, and 50 ASIs will be deployed to mantain law and order in and around the area.

The rath yatra of Lord Lingaraj is celebrated in Odisha on Ashokastami, which falls in the month of Chaitra. This festival, which is thought to be ‘Papa Binashakari Yatra’ (festival that destroys all evil and sins), will last five to seven days. Rukuna Rath is also known as the ‘Analeuta’ chariot because it does not turn during the return journey. The direction of the gods’ altars is reversed, and the chariot is drawn from the opposite side.
