The regional center of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in 12 districts of Odisha on Wednesday. According to the weather office, Odisha experienced ‘kalbaisakhi’ today.
The IMD forecast that five districts in Odisha would probably see heavy to extremely heavy rains today. It also projected that there will be a very good chance of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds of up to 30 to 40 kmph at one or two locations in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Gajapati, Ganjam, Khurdha, Nayagarh, and Puri.
Likewise, it is probable that there may be one or two areas of severe rain (7–11 cm) in Khurdha, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, and Nayagarh.
The IMD has also issued a yellow warning for seven districts including Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj.
Meanwhile, constant overnight rain disrupted normal life in the twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, Khurdha, Nayagarh, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Ganjam, and Kandhamal districts on Wednesday.
In several places, trees were uprooted causing extensive damage due to the Norwester. Many districts have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Tuesday causing waterlogging.
Rainwater got into the Sundargarh District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) blood bank. The hospital’s operations were impacted by nearly six inches of standing water. In Sundargarh, it has been pouring rain for the past three days.
As of Thursday, the IMD predicted that the weather will likely change.
