Due to the prevailing monsoon trough and a low-pressure region established in the Bay of Bengal, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange warning for severe to very heavy rainfall at one or two locations in ten districts of Odisha during the next four days.
For August 1 and 2, the Orange warning has been issued for Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Kendrapara, Angul, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Jajpur, and Bhadrak. During this time, these areas are expected to receive 70 mm to 200 mm of rain.
The IMD regional center here, in its mid-day bulletin, said, “The low-pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining West Bengal Coasts now lies over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts. Associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level tilting southwestwards with height.”
At mean sea level, the monsoon trough now moves through Amritsar, Ludhiana, Bareilly, Patna, and Bankura, the center of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and surrounding north Odisha and West Bengal coasts, and then southeast to the east-central Bay of Bengal.
Between 0.9 and 3.1 km above mean sea level, a trough runs from northwest Bihar to the cyclonic circulation linked with the low-pressure system over northwest Bay of Bengal and neighboring portions of north Odisha and West Bengal coasts.
Meanwhile, occasional rains have fallen as a result of low-pressure regions that emerged in the Bay of Bengal in recent weeks. Between June 1 and June 29, the state received 461.9 mm of rain. However, 12 of the 30 districts have seen less than normal downpours during the period.
