The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain alert in Odisha for two days (July 25 and 26). This is due to the establishment of a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, which strengthened into a low pressure system and, as a result, a depression.
According to the IMD, Monday’s low-pressure area over Westcentral India and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha has intensified into a well-defined low-pressure area over the same region, with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level. During the next 24 hours, it is likely to concentrate into a depression over the same area. As a result, it is expected to drift slowly west-northwest across the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha beaches.
Heavy rain of 7 to 11 cm is expected in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nawarangapur, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts until Wednesday morning, with light to moderate rain or thundershower in most other parts of southern Odisha. Furthermore, the IMD has issued an Orange warning (Be Prepared) for the next two days.
Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20 cm) is expected in isolated areas of Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada districts on July 25. It also issued a Yellow warning of heavy rain in the districts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Nayagarh, Khurda, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Mayurbhanj.
The meteorological office further stated that light to moderate rain or thundershowers are possible in most sections of southern and coastal Odisha, as well as many other portions of the state.
On July 26, isolated areas in Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapad, and Bolangir may get heavy to extremely heavy rains. Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) is expected in Rayagada, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Boudh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sambalpur, Sonepur, and Bargarh. On Tuesday, most of the state is likely to have light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
Aside from that, the IMD has stated that squally weather is likely due to low pressure and subsequent depression, as well as heavy monsoon flow, squally weather with gusty surface wind speed reaching 45 to 55 kmph is to be experienced along and off Odisha coast between July 25 and 27. The weather office has also asked fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period.
The IMD warned of water logging in low-lying areas, poor visibility during heavy rains, traffic congestion in urban areas, and the danger of kutcha home wall collapse.
It further stated that landslides are possible in sensitive hilly parts of the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal.
