The formation of a new cyclonic circulation over the east-central Bay of Bengal is expected to bring heavy rain to various parts of Odisha beginning September 2 and increasing in intensity beginning September 4, according to the regional office of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) here in its midday bulletin on Thursday.

According to the weather service, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in the majority of the state’s districts. Yellow rain warnings have been issued for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Angul, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Baleshwar, Nabrangpur, Kalahandi, and Bolangir districts, which may receive 70 to 110 mm of rain. Thunder and lightning are possible in coastal, southern, and inland Odisha, accompanied with heavy rain.

South Odisha, including the coast, has been affected by the weak monsoon. The temperature has been 4°C to 5°C above normal for the last five days.

The weather forecast by the IMD for the next five days is below:

Day 1: (Valid up to 0830 hrs IST of 01.09.2023)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in a few places over the districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be updated): Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.

Day 2: (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 01.09.2023 to 0830 hrs IST of 02.09.2023)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in many places over the districts of interior Odisha and at a few places over the districts of Coastal Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be updated): Thunderstorms with lightning are very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabrangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, Sonepur, Boudh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur.

Day 3: (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 02.09.2023 to 0830 hrs IST of 03.09.2023)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in many places over the districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be updated): Thunderstorm with lightning is very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Ganjam.

Heavy rainfall is very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Bargarh, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Cuttack.

Day 5: (Valid from 0830 hrs IST of 04.09.2023 to 0830 hrs IST of 05.09.2023)

Light to moderate rain or thundershower is very likely to occur in most places over the districts of Odisha.

Yellow Warning (Be updated): Heavy rainfall very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabrangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Angul, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, and Sundargarh.
