The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for numerous districts in Odisha, telling inhabitants to “be aware” of probable thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds during the next five days.
According to the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar’s Midday Weather Bulletin, the southwest monsoon’s withdrawal line continues to travel through northern India, although Odisha is still experiencing active weather conditions.
The state has seen widespread mild to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours, with certain interior regions reporting severe downpours.
The maximum rainfall was recorded in Bhuban (Dhenkanal), Tikabali (Kandhamal), and Nawana (Mayurbhanj), with each receiving 7 cm. Other locations, such as Balisankara (Sundargarh), Telkoi (Keonjhar), and Jujumura (Sambalpur), received heavy rainfall of 5-6 cm.
Forecast and Warnings
The IMD prediction forecasts light to moderate rain or thundershowers in scattered areas throughout the state throughout the coming week.
A Yellow Warning (BE AWARE) is in place for the next five days (September 18-22). During this time, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds of 30-40 kmph are quite likely to strike one or two locations throughout many districts.
Days 1-3 (Sept 18-20): The warning is specifically for coastal districts like Balasore, Bhadrak, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Ganjam, as well as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh.
Days 4-5 (Sept 21-22): The warning expands to include more interior districts such as Dhenkanal, Angul, Boudh, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
No warnings are currently in effect for September 23rd and 24th. The forecast for the next three days shows no significant change in the weather pattern.
The alert warns the public to use caution during thunderstorms, avoid taking refuge under trees, and remain indoors.
