The low pressure region that emerged in the south Bay of Bengal has deepened and developed into a depression over the Andhra coast of the west-central Bay of Bengal. Since Friday, it has been raining in several regions of Odisha, including the twin towns of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
The India Meteorological Department’s regional office has projected rain across coastal and inland Odisha on Saturday.
The meteorological office predicts heavy rain in Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts today. These districts are under a yellow rain warning. Similarly, rain is expected in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur, and Dhenkanal. Light to moderate rain is also expected in one or two locations in Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Jajpur, Balasore, Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak.
The weather will be cloudy in some areas with gusty winds. Winds of 40 to 50 kmph, with gusts of 60 kmph, are forecast along the South Odisha coast, hence fisherman have been cautioned not to enter into the water.
According to the IMD, Khurdha received the most rainfall (75 mm) on Friday, followed by Jagatsinghpur (61.2 mm), Paradip (61.1 mm), Gopalpur (58.6 mm), and Parlakhemundi (53 mm). Similarly, Chhatrapur received 51.8 mm, Bhubaneswar 51.6 mm, Nayagarh 49 mm, Puri 40.5 mm, Rayagada 35.6 mm, Cuttack 33.4 mm, and Daringibari 30 mm.
The weather in the state will change beginning on Sunday, and once the rain has stopped, the cold wave will return. The minimum temperature in the state may decrease by 2°C to 4°C.
