On Thursday, a low-pressure area formed over southeast Bangladesh and the surrounding area, and it remained there on Friday due to cyclonic circulation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced this morning that it is expected to travel slowly west-northwestward and deepen into a depression across coastal West Bengal and the adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal over the next 48 hours.
As a result, numerous regions of Odisha are expected to see severe rain on Friday. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kalahandi. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Rayagada, and Gajapati.
The meteorological service predicts that the intensity of the rain will increase on Saturday. An orange advisory for severe to very heavy rain has been issued in three Odisha districts for Saturday. Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts are likely to receive between 70 and 200 mm of rain. During the downpour, the wind speed will be 40 to 50 km/h.
The IMD also warned of thunderstorms and lightning in isolated sections of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts. Fishermen have been cautioned not to enter the North Bay of Bengal or the waters along and off the Odisha coast during this period.
