The low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is expected to develop into a deep depression, resulting in heavy to very heavy rainfall in various Odisha districts during the next three days, according to the India Meteorological Department’s regional office on Friday.
As a result, the meteorological service has issued a red alert for exceptionally heavy rain (70 mm to 200 mm) in Koraput, Malkangiri, and Gajapati districts for three days commencing Friday. Koraput and Gajapati district governments have declared all educational institutions under their authority to be closed due to the weather prediction.
An orange signal for heavy rain has also been issued in Nabarangpur, Rayagada, and Ganjam. A yellow alert was issued in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, and Nuapada, Nayagarh, Khurda, and Puri districts. The twin city Cuttack and Bhubaneswar are also likely to experience heavy rainfall today.
According to the IMD, the wet spell would continue in south Odisha, including coastal Odisha, through Sunday. During the rain, the wind will blow at speeds of 35 to 45 km/h. Winds can gust up to 55 km/h.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has asked all District Collectors to relocate residents to storm shelters as needed. The meteorological agency has issued warnings of water logging in low-lying areas, landslides in mountainous areas, artificial floods in urban areas, and the collapse of mud buildings during the rain. District Magistrates and municipal officers in all of these districts have been instructed to stay vigilant.
Fishermen have been urged not to go out into the sea on Friday or Saturday.
