The India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional office here forecasted that a low pressure system will form over the northwest Bay of Bengal, next to the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts, on Tuesday, resulting in higher rainfall activity in the region.
Today, Ganjam, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Balasore, Malkkangiri, Korapur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Keonjhar districts have received a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms.
While the IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in some regions of Odisha beginning Wednesday, the intensity and extent of rain is expected to rise from today. The monsoon low-pressure line extends from the coast of West Bengal to the northwest Bay of Bengal. As a result, rain may occur in north, south, and interior Odisha today.
Odisha has been given a yellow alert in 20 districts, and the IMD has issued a thunder and lightning warning in 18 districts.
Light to moderate rain will fall across the state over the next two days. In general, rainfall will be heavy in south Odisha. Lightning and thundershowers are expected in some districts of north coastal and south Odisha.
In contrast, the state received 168.1 mm of rain between June 1 and July 3, which is 29% less than the usual rainfall. Several districts in Odisha’s south interior experienced light to moderate rain today.
