On Friday, renowned para-badminton player Pramod Bhagat earned a gold medal in the men’s single SL3 category at the 2018 Para Asian Games in a stunning display of ability and tenacity.
Pramod’s triumph completes a hat trick of gold medals for him, having previously won Paralympic Gold and World Championship Gold.
Pramod Bhagat represented the country for the fourth time at the Para Asian Games, winning one gold and two bronze medals in the three events in which he competed.
Bhagat demonstrated tremendous talent and resilience in the face of a difficult opponent and compatriot, Nitesh Kumar. The contest played out in a nail-biting fashion, with both shuttlers competing neck-to-neck.
Pramod defeated Nitesh by a score of 22-20 in the first game. Nitesh battled back valiantly, winning the second game 21-19. It all came down to the last to decide who would take home the gold medal.
In the third game, Nitesh started well, taking an early lead with Pramod trailing by almost 4 points. He maintained this lead throughout the last set, poised to win the match with a score of 18-14. Somehow, Pramod managed to pull off 2 consecutive points, bringing the score to 19-16 in Nitesh’s favor. However, the comeback king had other ideas. Just as he executed an impossible comeback at the Paralympic finals, Pramod staged another comeback, stunning Nitesh and claiming the final fame 21-19 to retain his gold medal.
The final score read 22-20, 18-21 and 21-19.
Talking about his win Pramod said: “Firstly a huge congratulations to Nitesh Kumar, I think he played the game of his life, but unfortunately ended up with a silver. He is a brilliant player and pushes me till the edge which he did today.”
“Somehow even when I was trailing, I had a belief that I would make a comeback and could win, the thought of losing never occurred to me. I focused on 1 point at a time and made it possible and I am really happy with my performance. Though I would have liked to improve my 2 bronze medals in both doubles. Lastly, I would also like to thank each and everyone for their support,” he added.
