Continuing its humanitarian assistance to earthquake-hit Myanmar under Operation Brahma, India has sent an additional consignment of relief material to Mandalay Chief Minister Myo Aung, who received it from Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur in the presence of Mandalay and Sagaing diaspora leaders.
According to the Indian Embassy in Yangon, the relief supplies included a RO water plant, a generator, rice, noodles, cooking oil, atta, sugar, dal, salt, MREs, blankets, and medications for the poor.
Following Myanmar’s deadly 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28, India initiated Operation Brahma to give vital help, including Search and Rescue (SAR), humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical assistance.
Earlier, on April 15, IAF C-17 delivered components for 20 prefabricated offices weighing around 50 tonnes to Myanmar. The structures will serve as temporary offices for several ministries in Naypyidaw. Two IAF C-17s were also deployed to fetch back physicians and personnel from the 60-para field hospital after de-induction. Over the previous two weeks, the 200-bed field hospital has successfully treated 2519 patients.
Last week, a team of Indian safety and demolition engineers assessed earthquake-affected sites in Mandalay and Naypyidaw.
A medical team from India, including an orthopedic surgeon, also helped treat patients injured in the terrible earthquake at Naypyidaw Hospital.
Under Operation Brahma, India was the First Responder to the earthquake hit Myanmar and has provided relief supplies of over 750 MT including essential medicines, foodgrain, ready-to-eat meals, tents, blankets, gensets, rapidly deployable surgical and medical shelters, water sanitation and hygiene services, drinking water, essential clothing, prefabricated office/residential structures, etc.
Further, humanitarian assistance consisting of a 80-member NDRF Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Specialists Team and a 127-member Indian Army field Hospital Team were also deployed.
The supply of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief material to Myanmar demonstrates India’s willingness to stand with the people of Myanmar and support through this difficult time, the Ministry of External Affairs maintained.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed great grief over the disaster and personally conveyed India’s sympathies to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of the State Administration Council and Myanmar’s Prime Minister, confirming India’s commitment to assisting Myanmar during this crisis.
On April 4, Prime Minister Modi met with Hlaing on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok to discuss the situation in Myanmar following the devastating earthquake, including India’s ongoing Operation Brahma efforts to provide humanitarian aid, disaster relief, and medical assistance.
The Senior General expressed gratitude for India’s aid efforts. The Prime Minister stated that, as the First Responder, India stands with Myanmar in this moment of crisis and is prepared to provide additional material support and resources.
