Today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange warning for severe to very heavy rain in seven Odisha districts. Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Bolangir, and Nuapada districts are expected to experience severe rainfall ranging from 7 cm to 20 cm today due to an active low-pressure region over the Bay of Bengal.
The low-pressure region that emerged on Thursday is still active today around the northwest Bay of Bengal, over the north-Odisha coast and nearby West Bengal coast. It is expected to continue west-northwest for the following two to three days, affecting North Odisha and North Chhattisgarh.
On Friday, a yellow alert has been issued for 12 districts due to moderate to heavy rains. Due to the nonstop rains that have been falling since Thursday, low-lying regions in numerous districts may become flooded. The IMD has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in five Odisha districts tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the rainfall recorded at seven centers in Odisha from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm is as follows:
- Puri: 66.2 mm
- Bhubaneswar: 57.6 mm
- Balasore: 42.6 mm
- Gopalpur: 35.8 mm
- Chandabali: 16.7 mm
- Paradip: 14.7 mm
- Jharsuguda: 13.4 mm
Meanwhile, the recent monsoon season has resulted in a 10% rainfall deficit in Odisha. According to the IMD, 11 districts have reported a lack of rainfall, 18 districts have gotten moderate rains, and one district has received severe rains.
