The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists for the upcoming Oscars on Thursday. Despite an intensive campaign, director SS Rajamouli’s RRR managed to advance in only one category, Music (Original Song), for the song “Naatu Naatu”. The film was nominated for several awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Visual Effects, among others. While RRR did not appear on any other list except for Original Song, it still has a chance to be nominated in the other major categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. This would be a first for a Bollywood film.
Meanwhile, the Gujarati film Last Film Show advanced in the International Feature Film category, and Shaunak Sen’s festival favorite All That Breathes advanced in the Documentary Feature Film race. It’s worth noting that Last Film Show’s Oscar submission caused quite a stir, as many expected the more popular and commercially successful RRR to be chosen as India’s official selection for International Feature category nomination. The Elephant Whisperers, a documentary short by Kartiki Gonsalves, was also selected for the Documentary Short Film shortlist.
All in all, Shaunak Sen’s acclaimed documentary feature All That Breathes has a strong chance of not only receiving an Oscar nomination, but to actually win one. Last year, Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s documentary Writing With Fire had secured an Oscar nomination.
On March 12, 2023, the 95th Academy Awards will be held live in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre. Jimmy Kimmel, the popular talk show host, will host the prestigious event for the third time.
