Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday, reinforcing his demand for discussion and diplomacy in the wake of the Ukraine issue.
Putin told Modi on recent developments in Russia, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
On June 24, a failed coup attempt was launched against the Russian government by the Wagner group, a private Russian military company. It happened amid rising tensions between the Russian Defense Ministry and the leader of the Wagner organization, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
Meanwhile, while reviewing the situation in Ukraine, Modi, according to the PMO statement, reaffirmed his demand for discussion and diplomacy.
Both leaders discussed progress in bilateral relations and exchanged perspectives on regional and global topics of mutual importance, according to the statement. They decided to keep in touch and to work together to develop the two countries’ special and privileged strategic cooperation.
“In connection with the events of June 24 in Russia, Narendra Modi expressed understanding and support for the decisive actions of the Russian leadership to protect law and order, ensure stability in the country, and the security of its citizens,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
“When discussing topical issues of bilateral cooperation, they underscored the importance of further consistent implementation of the major joint projects in various areas and noted with satisfaction substantial growth in trade throughout 2022 and in the first quarter of this year.”
Interaction within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the G20, both of which India now holds the presidency, as well as the BRICS framework, received special emphasis. Modi also provided information on his foreign contacts, particularly those made during his recent visit to Washington, according to the statement.
“The situation around Ukraine was touched upon as well. The Russian President gave his assessment of the current state of affairs in the special military operation zone, having stressed Kiev’s utter refusal to undertake political and diplomatic steps to resolve the conflict,” the statement said.
