On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting to review recent developments in Nepal, where violence has resulted in the tragic loss of lives, particularly among young people.
The Prime Minister expressed profound concern about the situation, emphasizing the importance of stability, peace, and development in Nepal.
“On my return from Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security discussed the developments in Nepal. The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” he stated in a post on social media X.
This CCS meeting underscores India’s concern over regional security and its commitment to peace and security in South Asia.
Meanwhile, India has stepped up vigilance at the border and has advised its citizens in Nepal to avoid travel and stay indoors.
Nepal is currently experiencing a severe political and social crisis, precipitated by a contentious government move to ban 26 social media platforms.
This move caused widespread protests, particularly among youth. Protestors, known as the Gen Z movement, rushed to the streets, claiming that the ban violates free expression.
What started out as peaceful demonstrations swiftly became violent battles with security police. At least 19 people were murdered and more than 300 were injured when police allegedly used live shot, rubber bullets, and tear gas against protesters.
The situation remains dangerous, despite the government lifting the ban on social media.
The violence sparked widespread indignation and cries for accountability, prompting senior politicians to resign, including Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli.
According to reports, Nepal’s president, Ram Chandra Poudel, has also resigned.
Flights to and from the capital have been halted, and the Army has intervened to maintain calm.
