Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a three-day visit to Brunei Darussalam and Singapore on Tuesday, hoping to strengthen ties and commemorate diplomatic milestones.
This will be the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei. PM Modi will stay in Brunei from September 3 to 4 before traveling to Singapore.
In his farewell statement, Modi stated that he was looking forward to meetings with Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and other members of the Royal family. “As we celebrate 40 years of diplomatic ties, I am eager to advance our historical relationship with Brunei to new heights,” Modi said.
In Singapore on September 4 and 5, he will meet with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.
PM Modi will also address Singapore’s “vibrant” business community.
Modi’s agenda in Singapore includes discussions to deepen the strategic partnership between India and Singapore. “I am looking forward to exploring new and emerging areas of collaboration, including advanced manufacturing, digitalization, and sustainable development,” he noted.
Brunei and Singapore are important partners in India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy. The Prime Minister’s visit seeks to develop these ties and broaden India’s engagement with the ASEAN region.
Modi expressed optimism that these visits will greatly boost India’s strategic ties with Brunei and Singapore while also increasing its participation with the ASEAN region.
