Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Kannur Airport in Kerala on Saturday morning. He is on his way to Wayanad, which has been devastated by landslides.
The accident occurred on July 30, leaving 416 people dead and more than 150 missing.
He is accompanied by Union Minister of State for Tourism, actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi, the only BJP candidate to win in Kerala.
Modi was greeted at the airport by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and other top federal and state government officials.
Soon after, Prime Minister Modi and others boarded a chopper bound for Wayanad, where they will arrive in Kalpetta.
Before landing in Kalpetta, Modi will perform an airborne survey of the four landslide-ravaged villages.
Modi will visit patients at hospitals and relief camps in Wayanad, where over 10,700 people have been displaced by landslides.
Following that, Modi will convene a review meeting in which Khan, Vijayan, and other officials will participate.
Following this, the Prime Minister would return to Kannur airport at 3.30 p.m. before departing for New Delhi.
PM Modi’s visit comes at a time when his government assessed the situation and swiftly responded by deploying over 1,200 rescuers from the NDRF, Army, Air Force, Navy, Fire Services, and Civil Defence, among others, for rescue and relief operations.
More than 100 ambulances, along with doctors and other medical personnel, were dispatched to provide medical support and treatment.
The Indian Army built a 190-foot Bailey bridge in Wayanad to help convey heavy machinery and ambulances.
Surprisingly, building of this bridge was finished in only 71 hours, considerably improving rescue operations by allowing heavy vehicles and machinery to be mobilised to rescue over 200 persons who had become stranded due to bridge damage.
In addition, the Central Government has formed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to tour the state’s impacted areas.
The team has been in Wayanad for two days and will end their visit on Saturday.
