On the sidelines of the COP28 meeting in Dubai on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, with whom he discussed bilateral cooperation and the well-being of the Indian population in the oil-rich country.
The meeting is noteworthy because an Indian court in Qatar sentenced eight former Indian Navy members to death on October 26, and the Indian government has allegedly launched an appeal against the decision.
“On the sidelines of the COP28 Summit in Dubai yesterday, had the opportunity to meet HH Sheikh @TamimBinHamad, the Amir of Qatar.
“We had a good conversation on the potential of bilateral partnership and the well-being of the Indian community in Qatar,” Modi posted on X on Saturday.
The Indian nationals were arrested in August last year in an alleged instance of espionage while working for the private enterprise Al Dahra. The charges against the Indian nationals were not made public by the Qatari authorities or New Delhi.
India has slammed the Qatari court’s decision as “deeply” disturbing and vowed to pursue all legal options in the dispute.
On Friday, Prime Minister Modi had a busy agenda, speaking at four sessions of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, engaging with various international leaders, and holding bilateral talks.
