Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet Wednesday submitted their resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.
According to a statement released by Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President accepted the resignation and asked that the Prime Minister and the Union Council of Ministers hold their positions till a new government is formed.
On Saturday, June 8, Modi is expected to take the oath of office for a third consecutive term, following the Lok Sabha elections that gave the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a resounding majority. It is also expected that the Union Cabinet’s swearing-in event will occur on the same day.
One day after the results of the election were announced, on Wednesday morning, the Union Cabinet convened at the Prime Minister’s home. According to sources, it has suggested that the 17th Lok Sabha be dissolved.
According to the sources, the meeting started at 11.30 am and was followed by a meeting of the council of ministers. The cabinet and ministerial council meeting was the final one under Modi 2.0. The 18th Lok Sabha is made possible by the Cabinet’s recommendation to dissolve the present Lok Sabha. The current 17th Lok Sabha’s tenure expires on June 16.
According to the sources, the Cabinet meeting also reviewed issues pertaining to the formation of the next government and took stock of the Lok Sabha election results.
With the support of its partners, the BJP is poised to establish the government after failing to secure a majority with 240 seats. In contrast, the NDA was awarded 293 seats in the 543-member House. Congress, the main opposition party, secured 99 seats, while the INDIA alliance as a whole secured 233 seats.
