India has expressed its support for US President Donald Trump’s leadership as peace talks in Gaza make great progress. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded evidence that Hamas is planning to release Israeli hostages. In a statement posted on X (previously Twitter), PM Modi stated, “India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.” His words came after Hamas made a breakthrough revelation on Friday, revealing that it has agreed to release all Israeli hostages under Trump’s suggested framework.
Hamas agrees to release hostages
Hamas’ declaration represented a significant development in the long-running war. As part of Trump’s promised peace proposal, the organization declared that all Israeli hostages, dead or living, would be released. However, Hamas stated that, while it welcomed some aspects of the proposal, others required additional negotiation. In its statement, Hamas declared its willingness to “immediately engage in negotiations through mediators” to work out the plan’s contents.
Furthermore, Hamas indicated its willingness to delegate control to a body of Palestinian “independent technocrats” as part of a transitional governing framework.
Trump’s role
Hamas formally congratulated President Trump for his efforts to advance the peace process, as well as backing from Arab, Islamic, and international allies. In response, Trump encouraged Israel to end its bombing campaign in Gaza, underlining that peace could only be reached if Hamas’ willingness to negotiate was matched by a cease-fire. “Based on the statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for long-term peace,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He said, “Israel must immediately cease bombing Gaza so that we can securely and speedily evacuate the hostages! Right now, it is just too risky to do so.”
Earlier, Trump had set a Sunday evening deadline for Hamas to accept his peace plan, warning that “all hell will break out” if the terror group failed to comply. The plan, described by Trump as Hamas’s “last chance” to end hostilities, includes a 20-point proposal that outlines a framework for the future governance of Gaza.
Trump’s peace proposal
Trump’s peace plan, which the White House labeled as a “roadmap for peace,” calls for:
- An immediate ceasefire and a complete exchange of hostages and prisoners.
- A phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
- The disarmament of Hamas.
- The establishment of a transitional government under international supervision to manage Gaza’s future.
This approach aims to not only halt the current crisis, but also establish the groundwork for long-term stability in Gaza after years of brutal warfare.
