Ponniyin Selvan, a character created by Mani Ratnam, is on a rampage. In just ten days, the critically acclaimed historical drama has surpassed the Rs 350 crore mark worldwide. After a strong first week, with positive reviews and despite competition from Hrithik Roshan’s Vikram Vedha, in which Ponniyin Selvan earned more than Rs 300 crore globally, the film grossed more than Rs 50 crore in its second weekend.
The film has also written history in Tamil Nadu, surpassing the lifetime collections of Viswasam and Baahubali2 to become the state’s all-time second highest grosser, with collections in the region of Rs 150 crore.
Ponniyin Selvan is also the first non-Rajinikanth-starrer in decades to become the all-time number one Tamil film in the United States. According to the analyst, the film has surpassed Rajinikanth-Akshay Kumar’s sci-fi blockbuster 2.0, which had a total of $5,509,317 in box office receipts.
PS-1 is also the highest-grossing Indian film in the UK this year, surpassing blockbusters such as KGF: Chapter 2, SS Rajamouli’s RRR, and Bollywood smash hit Brahmastra. Taran Adarsh, a trade analyst, called the film a “box office monster” and tweeted that Ponniyin Selvan is rewriting Tamil Nadu record books.
PS-1, based on Kalki’s works, hit theaters on September 30th in five languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada. Karthi, Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, and others star in the film. The second film is expected to release 2023 summer.
