According to party officials, Lee Jun-seok, chairman of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and discussed various support measures and development cooperation between the two countries.
The meeting took place on Monday, the third day of Lee’s visit to Ukraine as the leader of a PPP delegation of about ten people, including lawmakers, according to a press release from the party, which did not provide details, such as the meeting location, for security reasons.
According to Yonhap, during the meeting, officials from Ukraine’s presidential office requested military assistance and proposed South Korean participation in post-war reconstruction projects in war-torn cities.
Lee told Ukraine officials that he would convey their message to President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Lee also expressed his support, saying that South Korea will continue to assist Ukraine in finding peace.
“We also went through a difficult war in the past, and I believe the difficulty can be overcome in a similar way,” Lee said. “International solidarity centered on freedom and peace is urgently required.”
The PPP delegation also met with Oleksandr Korniyenko, the chief deputy speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, and other parliamentary officials on the same day.
According to the press release, Lee and Korniyenko discussed how South Korean companies with advanced technologies can provide “practical support” to Ukraine’s reconstruction.
“The South Korean government has already provided US$10 million in humanitarian aid, but we are reviewing additional support considering the situation in Ukraine,” Lee said.
The PPP delegation arrived in Ukraine from Poland on Saturday and will return later this week.
