Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, the Supreme Court’s senior most judge, was named the 50th Chief Justice of India on Monday, and he will take the oath on November 9.
Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju announced the appointment of Justice Chandrachud as Chief Justice of India for a two-year term.
Justice Chandrachud, the son of the longest-serving Chief Justice of India, succeeds Justice U U Lalit. From February 22, 1978 to July 11, 1985, his father presided over the Indian judiciary.
After a 74-day tenure, the incumbent CJI will step down on November 8th at the age of 65.
Justice Chandrachud, who views dissent as the “safety valve of democracy,” was a member of several Constitution benches and landmark Supreme Court decisions, including those concerning the Ayodhya land dispute and the right to privacy.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22,” Minister Rijiju tweeted quoting the notification.
On October 11, Chief Justice of India U U Lalit proposed to the Centre the name of Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, the senior-most Supreme Court judge, as his successor.
After the retirement of the current Chief Justice of India, Uday Umesh Lalit, he will become the 50th Chief Justice of India.
