Raksha Bandhan 2024: History and significance
One of the legends associated with Raksha Bandhan stems from the Hindu epic Mahabharata. According to tradition, Lord Krishna accidently cut his found on the Sudarshan Chakra. Draupadi, seeing him hurt, tore a piece of material from her saree and knotted it to stem the bleeding. Lord Krishna, moved by her action, swore to safeguard Draupadi forever. He kept his vow when Draupadi was publicly humiliated in Hastinapur’s royal court when the Kauravas attempted to disrobe her.
Another tale attributes the festival’s origins to Goddess Indrani and Lord Indra. According to Drik Panchang, the story focuses on the power of sacred thread. Lord Indra was challenged by demons and couldn’t equal their power. When Lord Indra was departing for battle, Goddes Indrani placed a sacred pouch called as Raksha Potali around his hand, resulting in his victory against demons.
Raksha Bandhan has a lot of meaning for Hindus. It honors the link between siblings. Furthermore, the holiday provides an opportunity for married ladies to return to their parents’ home for the ceremony.
During Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie a holy thread (Rakhi) around their brother’s hands and perform rituals such as aarti and tilak ceremony. Meanwhile, to commemorate their sister’s devotion and affection for them, the brothers swear to keep them safe from all harm. Nowadays, brothers tie Rakhi on their sister’s wrists, and sisters do the ceremony together. In the modern era, exchanging gifts has also been part of the tradition. Siblings shower each other with gifts and thoughtful surprises.
