India’s new ODI captain Rohit Sharma has shut out the outside noise and only focusing at the process at hand after taking on the reigns from Virat Kohli last week. The Board of control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to make Rohit the white-ball captain angered Virat Kohli’s fans however the selectors did not need to have two distinct players leading the T20I and ODI teams.
Kohli had stepped down from the post of the T20I skipper after the world Cup in UAE last month but desired to remain the ODI skipper. The selectors thought that might have created confusion within the two teams and consequently, took the call to offer Rohit the captaincy in limited-overs cricket.
He additionally changed Ajinkya Rahane as the test vice-captain and will assume both the obligations in the upcoming tour of South Africa.
“When you are playing cricket for India, the pressure is always going to be high. The pressure is always going to be there. There will be a lot of people talking about it; be it positively or negatively.
“For me, personally, as a cricketer, it is important to focus on my job and not to focus on what people are talking about because you can’t control that. I have said it a million times and I will keep repeating it,” Rohit said on bcci.tv.
The 34-12 months-old went on to add that he wants the players to share a strong bond when they play for India.
“This is also the same message to the team and the team understand that when we are playing a high-profile tournament, there will be a lot of talks.
“It’s just important for us to focus on what we have in hand; which is to go and win games and play the way you are known for. So, those talks outside are immaterial.
“What we think of each other is more important. You want to share a strong bond between players and that is what will help us achieve the goal we want to,” the Mumbai batsman said.
Rohit’s stint as the test vice-captain will start in South Africa in which they will play 3 tests from December 26. he will then take over as the ODI skipper in the subsequent 3-match series from January 19.
