According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the Ukrainian army is under increasing pressure in eastern Donetsk but has repelled all Russian advances towards Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Slovyansk.
For days, fierce fighting has raged around Bakhmut, and pro-Russian rebels reported fighting had reached inside Bakhmut on Friday, but the statements could not be verified, according to the dpa news agency.
Bakhmut, a small town, is regarded as a key component of the defense of the last Ukrainian-held urban area in the Donbass.
If Bakhmut and other small towns fall, Russian troops will have a relatively clear path to Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
