In a surprising move, Sam Altman has officially joined Microsoft just days after being ousted as the chief executive officer of OpenAI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced Altman’s appointment, expressing confidence in their partnership with OpenAI and emphasizing their commitment to innovation and customer support.
Nadella stated on X, “We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners.” He also revealed that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with their colleagues, will be leading a new advanced AI research team at Microsoft.
Microsoft, having invested billions in OpenAI, has integrated the company’s technology into its offerings, including Bing. Despite Altman’s departure from OpenAI, the collaboration between the two companies remains intact.
Earlier on the same day, OpenAI announced the appointment of former Twitch chief Emmett Shear as its new CEO, disregarding calls from investors to reinstate Altman. Altman was dismissed by OpenAI on Saturday, with the company expressing gratitude for his contributions but stating the need for new leadership as they move forward.
The board of OpenAI released a statement, saying, “We are grateful for Sam’s many contributions to the founding and growth of OpenAI. At the same time, we believe new leadership is necessary as we move forward.” Altman’s swift transition to Microsoft marks a significant development in the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence research and technology.
