Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2022 Updates: While attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the world is not at war, according to news agency PTI. It is their first meeting since the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted in February of this year. Though India has not yet condemned Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, it has advocated for a peaceful resolution to the crisis through dialogue. The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the annual summit, are said to have discussed bilateral, regional, and global issues.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan handed over the rotating presidency of the eight-member SCO to India. Taking to Twitter, Uzbek Foreign Minister Vladimir Norov wrote: “As a result #SCOSamarkandSummit, India will host next SCO summit as a chairman of Organisation in 2023. We will do our best to assist India, our strategic partner, in the implementation of this responsible mission.”
Speaking at the SCO summit on Friday, Modi stated that the Indian economy is expected to grow by 7.5% this year, the highest among the world’s largest economies. In his speech in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, the prime minister also stated that India is on its way to becoming a manufacturing powerhouse. The second day of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit began with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, among others, in attendance.
The summit will discuss regional security challenges, as well as increasing trade and energy supplies, among other topics. On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings, including with Putin and Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev among other leaders.
