Stock Market Highlights on Tuesday, January 06, 2026:On Tuesday, Indian benchmark market indices declined for the second consecutive session, led by a drop in the shares of heavyweight stocks such as Reliance Industries (RIL) and Trent.
The Nifty 50 index closed at 26,178.70, down 71.6 points (0.27 percent), while the Sensex index ended at 85,063.34, down 376.28 points (0.44 percent).
RIL shares fell over 4% intraday, the sharpest loss in over eight months, following rumors that CLSA had excluded the firm from its India model portfolio. Meanwhile, shares of Tata Group’s retail subsidiary, Trent, fell 9% on its third-quarter business update.
Trent, Reliance Industries, Kotak Mahindra Bank, ITC, and HDFC Bank were the worst declines on the BSE Sensex index. The top gainers in the index included ICICI Bank, Sun Pharma, HUL, SBI, and TCS.
In the broader markets, the NSE Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.19 percent, while the NSE Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.22%.
The NSE Nifty Oil and Gas index was the largest laggard, down 1.75 percent, followed by Nifty Media and Nifty Chemicals. On the flip side, Nifty Healthcare and Pharma were among the top gainers.
