Stock Market Close Highlights, January 2, 2026: Indian shares closed higher on Friday, bolstered by broad-based buying across most sectors, except FMCG.
The BSE Sensex closed at 85,762.01, up 573.41 points or 0.67 percent, while the NSE Nifty50 was quoted at 26,328.55, up 182 points or 0.7%. The Nifty reached a fresh intraday high of 26,332.15 points.
On the Sensex, the top gainers were NTPC, Trent, Bajaj Finance, SBI, and Power Grid, while ITC, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Axis Bank, and Bharti Airtel finished in the red.
In the broader markets, the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 1.01 percent and 0.72 percent, respectively.
Sectorally, the Nifty Auto, Metal, PSU Bank, Realty, and Consumer Durables indices all climbed more than 1%, indicating robust buying demand beyond the headline names. In contrast, Nifty FMCG was the only laggard, falling 1.19 percent.
