Stock Market Highlights, Wednesday, December 18, 2024: The benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty50, closed the Wednesday session in negative territory. The 30-share Sensex fell 502.25 points, or 0.62 percent, to close at 80,182.20. Today, the index fluctuated between 80,868.02 and 80,050.07 points.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 closed down 137.15 points, or 0.56 percent, at 24,198.85. Today, the Nifty 50 traded between 24,394.45 and 24,149.85 points.
33 of the 50 Nifty50 members finished in the red, led by Tata Motors, Power Grid, BEL, JSW Steel, and NTPC, which extended losses of up to 2.92 percent. Dr. Reddy’s Labs, Trent, Cipla, Wipro, and Reliance Industries were among the 17 equities that closed in the green, with gains ranging up to 2.48%
Broader markets followed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices closing down 0.64 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively.
With the exception of the IT, Pharma, and Healthcare indices, sectoral indices finished largely lower. Banking stocks were the laggards among sectors, with the Bank Nifty, PSU Bank, and Private Bank indices falling by up to 1.92 percent. Among others, the Nifty Financials index, Media, and Consumer Durables all fell by up to 2.24 percent.
