Stock market closing highlights, Tuesday, August 26, 2025: Indian stocks ended lower amid reports that the US President notified additional 25 per cent tariffs on India, thus placing the total tariff on India at 50 per cent, with-effect-from August 27.
At closure, the NSE Nifty 50 fell 255.7 points, or 1.02 percent, to 24,712.05. The BSE Sensex was down 849.37 points, or 1.04 percent, at 80,786.54.
HUL, Maruti Suzuki, ITC, and TCS were among the top gainers on the BSE, while Sun Pharma, Tata Steel, Trent, and Bajaj Finance were among the top drags.
The Nifty MidCap index dropped 1.62 percent and the Nifty SmallCap index lost 2.03 percent in the overall markets.
With a 2.24 percent decline, the Nifty Realty index was the sector with the biggest loss. The Nifty Pharma index fell 1.67 percent, followed by the Nifty Metal index, which fell 1.66 percent, and the Nifty PSU Bank index, which fell 1.87 percent. Only the Nifty FMCG closed the day up 0.91 percent.
The India VIX, sometimes referred to as the “fear index,” ended the day 3.69 percent higher.
