Stock market closing highlights today, September 16, 2025: Indian stock markets closed higher on Tuesday as investors awaited the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting outcome, which is set to be announced on Wednesday (September 17).
Back home, key negotiators from India and the United States (US) were due to meet today to take stock of discussions on the proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA).
The BSE Sensex closed at 82,380.69, up 594.95 points (0.73 percent), while the NSE Nifty50 finished at 25,239.1, up 169.9 points (0.68 percent).
On the BSE, the top Sensex gainers included Kotak Bank, M&M, L&T, Bharti Airtel, and Maruti Suzuki. On the other hand, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were among the worst performers.
In the broader market, the Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices finished 0.54 percent and 0.95 percent higher, respectively.
Among sectors, the Nifty Auto index was the biggest gainer, up 1.44 percent, followed by the Nifty Realty index, which rose 1.07 percent. In contrast, the Nifty FMCG index fell 0.24 percent at the close.
