Stock Market Highlights on Thursday, May 22, 2025: The benchmark equity indices closed down on Thursday, May 22, 2025, pulled down by widespread selling across industries. The BSE Sensex fell by 644.64 points, or 0.79 percent, to close at 80,951.99. Throughout the session, the index fluctuated between 80,489.92 and 81,323.24 points.
The NSE Nifty50 also fell by 203.75 points, or 0.82 percent, to 24,609.70.
Only Bharti Airtel, IndusInd Bank, and UltraTech Cement outperformed the Sensex. The remaining 27 stocks finished in the red. Notably, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, Power Grid Corporation, ITC, and Bajaj Finserv all decreased between 2.27 and 1.54%.
The fear index (India VIX) decreased 1.65% to 17.26 points.
In the broader basket, the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices fell 0.52 percent and 0.26 percent, respectively.
All NSE sectoral indices, with the exception of Nifty Media, closed in the red. The greatest drags were IT, Auto, FMCG, Consumer Durables, and Oil & Gas, which all fell by more than 1%.
Market breadth on the BSE was negative. Out of 4,086 traded equities, 2,165 fell, 1,758 rose, and 163 were unchanged.
