Stock Market Crash Highlights, Tuesday, December 17, 2024: The benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 fell sharply, losing more than 1% each, pulled down by selling across the counters. The 30-share Sensex fell 1,064.12 points, or 1.30%, to close Tuesday’s trading session at 80,684.45. Today, the index fluctuated between 81,613.64 and 80,612.20 points.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty50 closed down 332.25 points, or 1.35 percent, at 24,336. Today, the Nifty 50 traded between 24,624.10 and 24,303.45 points.
Bears won the day, as all of the Nifty50’s member equities, with the exception of Cipla and ITC, closed down. Shriram Finance, Grasim Industries, Bharti Airtel, Hero MotoCorp, and JSW Steel were among the top laggards, with losses of up to to 5.27 per cent.
Broader markets followed the benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 and Nifty Smallcap100 indices down 0.57 percent and 0.68 percent, respectively.
The fear index, India VIX, which measures market volatility, ended up 3.31 percent at 14.49 points.
All sectors indices fell, with the exception of Nifty Media, which rose by only 0.02 percent. Among others, all of the NSE’s banking indices, as well as Auto, Financial Services, Consumer Durables, and OMCs, fell by 1% each.
