Stock Market Highlights, Wednesday, Decemer 4, 2024: The benchmark equity indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty50 concluded Wednesday’s turbulent session in positive territory, extending their winning streak to four consecutive sessions. The Sensex closed 110.58 points, or 0.14 percent higher, at 80,956.33, trading between the range of 81,245.39-80,630.53.
The NSE Nifty50 closed at 24,467.45, up 10.30 points, or 0.04 percent. During intraday trading, the Nifty50 reached a high of 24,573.20, while the low was 24,366.30.
30 of the 50 member stocks on the Nifty50 fell, led by Bharti Airtel, Cipla, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, and Adani Ports, which lost up to 2.28 percent. HDFC Life, HDFC Bank, Apollo Hospital, NTPC, and Bajaj Finserv were among the 20 stocks that ended in the green, with gains extending up to 2.52 per cent.
Notably, index heavyweight HDFC Bank closed at a record high of Rs 1,860, having scaled a 52-week high of Rs 1,865 during intraday trading on Wednesday. HDFC Bank alone added 217 points to the BSE Sensex; without HDFC Bank, the markets could have ended in the negative zone.
Broader markets beat benchmarks, with the Nifty Midcap100 index up 1.05 percent. The Nifty Smallcap100 index finished in the green, up 0.89 percent.
The fear index, India VIX, which measures market volatility, ended up 0.86 percent at 14.50 points.
Banking shares outperformed on Wednesday, with the Nifty PSU Bank index finishing 2.25 percent higher than the other sectoral indices. Bank Nifty and the Nifty Private Bank index closed up 1.08 percent and 0.86 percent, respectively.
The Nifty Financials, IT, Realty, and Healthcare indices, among others, ended up by up to 2.14 percent, while the Nifty Auto, Metal, Pharma, FMCG, and OMCs indexes closed lower by up to 0.71 percent.
