Stock Market Highlights, Monday, February 3, 2025: The benchmark equity indices, the BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty50, fell as investors became cautious following US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Notably, Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and 10% on China, citing the necessity to combat illegal immigration and the drug trade.
The BSE Sensex fell 319.22 points, or 0.41 percent, to close at 77,186.74. Today, the index fluctuated between 77,260.37 and 79,756.09 points. NSE Nifty50, like the Sensex, ended lower by 121.10 points, or 0.52 percent, at 23,361.05. The Nifty50 reached a high of 23,381.60 and a low of 23,222 on Monday.
35 Nifty50 constituent stocks closed in the red, led by Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consumer, Hero MotoCorp, Coal India, and Bharat Electronics, which lost up to 4.67 percent. Meanwhile, Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, Mahindra & Mahindra, Wipro, and Bajaj Finserv were among the 13 member stocks that closed higher, with gains of up to 5.12 percent.
Smallcap stocks were among the worst laggards in larger markets, with the Nifty Smallcap100 index down by 2.13 percent. Meanwhile, the Nifty Midcap 100 index closed down 0.93 percent.
The day concluded on a mixed note for sectoral markets, with the Nifty Oil & Gas, FMCG, and PSU Bank indexes falling the most, by 2.22 percent, 1.67 percent, and 1.60 percent, respectively. Nifty IT, Auto, Pharma, Healthcare, and Consumer Durables all posted increases of up to 0.68 percent.
