The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty 50 fell nearly 2% on Friday, tracking losses in global peers. The BSE Sensex fell 1,017 points, or 1.84 percent, to close at 54,303, while the NSE Nifty 50 index fell 276 points, or 1.68 percent, to 16,202.
Index heavyweights like Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), Infosys, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and ICICI Bank, among others, contributed significantly to the indices’ losses. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Midcap index fell 0.6% or 145 points to 22,490, while the S&P BSE Smallcap index fell 0.7% or 182 points to 25,857.
On the sectoral front, the Nifty Bank index fell 1.7% to 34,484. The volatility index, India Vix, finished up 2.3% at 19.6 points.
