Skoda India has unveiled the Kylaq, the brand’s sub-4m compact SUV and smallest SUV to date. The Kylaq has made its global premiere in India, with prices starting at Rs 7.89 lakh (ex-showroom), with a full pricing list to be announced later. Bookings for the Kylaq will begin on December 2, with deliveries starting January 27, 2025.
Skoda India hopes to increase sales by a significant margin with the Kylaq, with a goal of 1,00,000 cars sold annually. Skoda now sells over 50,000 vehicles, with the Slavia and Kushaq being the most popular models.
The Kylaq has a slightly different style from the current crop of Skoda automobiles because it is based on the brand’s Modern Solid design theme, which debuted with the Skoda Elroq. The SUV boasts strong character lines all around, including a trademark fascia that combines the LED DRLs and black grille element. The headlamps are located below, and the lower half of the face features a mesh grille and a chrome bumper.
It is 3,995mm long, with a wheelbase of 2,566mm, width of 1,783mm, and height of 1,619mm. Despite its smaller dimensions as compared to the Kushaq, the Kylaq has proper Skoda proportions and, unlike its rivals in the segment, has considerable road presence that will help it in the size perception. It rides on 17-inch alloys and gets ample cladding as well as roof rails that add to the SUV character. At the rear, it gets squarish tail lamps with a T-shape LED signature, while the tailgate houses Skoda lettering in black.
The interior of the Kylaq has been borrowed from the Kushaq, therefore it is quite recognizable. The layout is essentially identical, with the same air conditioning vents, touch-based climate control, and 8-inch instrument screen. The primary 10-inch infotainment system remains unchanged, but it receives a new user interface that is speedier and more visually appealing.
Sunroof, keyless entry, wireless smartphone charger, wireless smartphone integration, ventilated seats, and power adjustment for the front two seats are among the available features. It also has a chilled glove box, cupholders, and an armrest/storage compartment. Despite being smaller than the Kushaq, the Kylaq’s back seats provide adequate space for tall passengers, however it is best enjoyed by two occupants. Rear passengers also get an armrest, adjustable headrests and three-point harnesses.
The Skoda Kylaq has a 446-litre boot, which is one of the largest in the market. The parcel tray also has a stowage compartment for additional luggage when needed, which is impressive.
Because the VW Group only offers petrol vehicles in India, the Kylaq also has only petrol engines. It comes with a single engine option: the 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol three-cylinder used in other VAG vehicles, which produces 115bhp and 178Nm of torque. This is coupled to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.
The Kylaq starts at Rs 7.89 Lakh, with the remaining pricing to be released at a later date. At this pricing, it undercuts its main competitors, including the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3X0, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, and Kia Sonet. While we have yet to drive the car in its production form, Skoda allowed our Ed to test the Kylaq’s handling and performance at the CoaSTT track in Coimbatore.
