The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD)’s Bhubaneswar regional center forecasted on Thursday that the Southwest Monsoon would most likely reach Odisha on June 9. It is probable that rains may arrive in coastal and southern Odisha prior than other parts of the state.
The Southwest Monsoon, which typically arrives in Odisha during the second week of June, is expected to arrive this year, according to the forecast office.
Manorama Mohanty, director of IMD Bhubaneswar said, “The Southwest Monsoon usually arrives in Odisha towards the second week of June – 12 or 13. We expect the Monsoon to touch south Odisha in the next three to four days. Till now, conditions are favourable.”
Southwest Monsoon touched the Andamans and Kerala well in advance. It normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 and advances to North-Eastern parts of India in the next couple of days.
However, the weather service has issued a warning that western Odisha will see scorching temperatures for the next two days. Bolangir and Bargarh are under an orange alert, while Kalahandi, Nuapada, Subarnapur, and Sambalpur are under a yellow warning for Thursday. The weather center has forecast that in several interior Odisha districts, the daytime high will probably reach beyond 40°C. In a similar vein, certain interior Odisha districts may experience lightning strikes and a possibility of light to moderate rain.
