Stree 2, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, had a tremendous box office launch on Independence Day, defying all expectations. The film outperformed the first day collections of 2023 successes Animal and Pathaan, which earned Rs 63.8 crore and Rs 57 crore, respectively. Stree 2 featured preview shows on Wednesday evening, followed by its official release on Thursday. According to trade expert Taran Adarsh, the film earned Rs 64.8 crore combined on both days. On Wednesday night, the film grossed Rs 9.4 crore and Rs 55.4 crore on Thursday.
Stree 2, directed by Amar Kaushik, is by and away the year’s biggest opener. Prior to this, the biggest Hindi opener of the year was Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone’s Fighter, which made Rs 24.6 crore on its opening day in January. Kalki 2898 AD, which was released across multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu and Tamil, made Rs 95 crore on its opening day, making it the biggest Indian opener of the year.
According to Sacnilk, Stree 2 had an overall occupancy of 77.09 percent on Thursday. In the Delhi-NCR region, the film had 1200 shows with 86.75 percent occupancy, while in Mumbai, the film had 1103 shows with an 81 percent occupancy. Stree 2, which was published on Independence Day, will now profit from the extended five-day weekend; Monday is also a Raksha Bandhan holiday in many regions of the country.
Stree 2 competed with John Abraham’s Vedaa and the Akshay Kumar-starring Khel Khel Mein. Vedaa was also released in Tamil and Telugu, but only earned Rs 6.52 crore in India, whereas Khel Khel Mein only made Rs 5 crore.
The film starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor is part of producer Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe, which began with Stree in 2018. It also comprises Roohi, Bhediya, and Munjya. Munjya was released earlier this year without much promotion and grossed Rs 107.48 crore throughout its theatrical run, making it the third greatest Hindi success of the year behind Fighter (Rs 199.45 crore) and Shaitaan (Rs 149.49 crore).
Stree 2 also stars Aparshakti Khurana, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Bannerjee, among others.
