The beneficiary of the liver transplantation was Umesh Kumar Rout of Sambalpur, a 49-year-old teacher, who received a portion of the liver of his sister Anita Kumari (41).

Explaining the procedure, Prof Sahu mentioned about 60 per cent of the donor’s liver was first taken out whereas the diseased liver was removed from the affected person simultaneously in a separate OT. The core transplant group at IMS and SUM Hospital included Dr Sumit Mohanty, Dr Satya Sundar Gajendra Mohapatra, Dr Santosh Kumar Singh, Dr Rajib Lochan Samal, Dr Debakanta Mishra, Dr Rajesh Kumar Bhola, Dr Girija Nandini Kanungo and transplant coordinators Susanta Kumar Biswal and Saroj Senapati.
Prof. Menon expressed satisfaction on the facilities obtainable at IMS and SUM Hospital for such high-end surgical procedures saying that the group members had been very cooperative and quick learners. The hospital might emerge as a centre for transplant surgical procedures in the future, he mentioned.
“It was the dream of SOA’s Founder-President Prof Manojranjan Nayak to start liver transplantation in Odisha and the first such surgery created history within the state,” Prof. Sahu mentioned.
