The trailer for Shabaash Mithu, a film based on the life of legendary cricketer Mithali Raj and starring Taapsee Pannu, was released today. Mithali Raj, known for her record-breaking 23-year international cricket career, scored over 10,000 runs in ODIs. The film chronicles her journey to becoming a legendary cricketer and an inspiration to billions of girls and women worldwide. The film is an homage to the recently deceased icon.
The trailer encapsulates the message of ‘nazariya badlo, khel badalgaya’ to the hilt with compelling dialogues and glimpses of the talented Taapsee playing Mithali with utmost conviction. The actor is known for her powerful performances and films that challenge stereotypes. Sourav Ganguly, one of India’s most iconic cricketers, launched the trailer today amid much fanfare.
The film, directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios, will be released in theaters on July 15th.
Mithali Raj, the Test and One-Day International captain of the Indian women’s national cricket team, announced her retirement from all formats of international cricket on June 8. Mithali retired as the leading run-scorer in women’s one-day internationals.
She played 232 matches for India, scoring 7805 runs at an average of 50.68. Mithali has scored 699 runs in 12 Tests, with a brilliant average of 43.68. She has also scored 2364 runs in 89 T20Is.
Mithali, who made her debut in 2002, is widely regarded as the best Indian female batter. She led the team to two 50-over World Cups. Raj scored an unbeaten 114 on her ODI debut at the age of 16 and quickly established herself as an important clog in India’s batting order. Raj, 36, became the first woman to play two decades of ODI cricket in October 2019.
