Teachers’ Day, also known as Shikshak Divas, commemorates the birthday of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, the country’s first Vice President (1952-1962), who went on to become the country’s second President (1962-1967), a scholar, philosopher, Bharat Ratna awardee, a highly respected teacher, and prolific statesman, who stated that “teachers should be the best minds in the country.”
Date:
Teachers’ Day is observed annually in India on September 5 to commemorate the birth of the country’s former Vice- President, scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, on this day in 1888.
History and importance:
When Dr. Radhakrishan became India’s second President in 1962, his students approached him to request permission to observe September 5 as a special day.
Dr. Radhakrishnan instead requested that September 5 be designated as Teachers’ Day in order to recognize teachers’ contributions to society.
Since then, September 5 has been designated as Teacher’s Day in schools, colleges, universities, and other educational institutions. Students put on shows, dances, and put on elaborate shows for their favorite teachers.
Celebrations:
For students, the day means receiving roses, chocolates, and gifts, including handmade cards, to express their gratitude to their favorite teachers. Teacher’s Day is a day of role reversal and celebration for senior students.
Teachers guide us from the time we start kindergarten, away from our parents, until we graduate. They shaped us and showed us which path to take in life. Teachers have always encouraged us to do the right thing, taught us lessons to follow in our daily lives, and inspired us throughout our lives.
Let us express our heartfelt gratitude to our beloved teachers on the occasion of Teacher’s Day.
