Kiev: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that an evacuation is taking place inside the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, which is under siege.
“The first group of about 100 people is already heading to the controlled area,” Zelensky tweeted.
He stated that the evacuees will arrive in the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on Monday, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The evacuation began at 4 p.m. local time, according to Petro Andryushchenko, an advisor to Mariupol’s mayor, who stated earlier on Telegram.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainian authorities are collaborating with the United Nations to evacuate additional civilians from the plant.
The evacuation from Mariupol was the focal point of Thursday’s talks between Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Mariupol, a key Azov Sea port city in eastern Ukraine, has seen heavy fighting since the start of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
